New bank notes to bear Madiba image

It was mentioned by by out honourable President Jacob Zuma during his State Of The Nation Address a couple of days ago. This change was also mentioned by the City Press newspaper.

imageimageWhen South Africa was still being governed by the British Empire, it was obvious that our economy made use of their currency. When we claimed independence in 1961, and started to govern ourselves, we introduced our own currency and banknotes.

And in the 1990’s when South Africa finally become a democratic nation, our banknotes was changed to show the country’s natural heritage with images of the Big Five.

imageThis made sense, because the previous designs, bearing the image of Jan Van Riebeeck, was ideologically indicative of a single culture. The intention new banknote design in a democratic South Africa was to reflect a cultural heritage common to all South Africans – The Big Five. This, I believe, was instrumental in allowing all South Africans to concentrate on the future, without being constantly reminded of all the hardships of Apartheid.

imageBut now, for no apparent reason other than to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Verster Prison, the South African banknotes are being changed again. The new notes will all reflect images of Nelson Mandela.

As with the Apartheid-era banknotes being biased towards the white European culture by bearing the image of Jan Van Riebeeck ,this new design with the image of Madiba points towards a single culture – Xhosa. Isn’t South Africa supposed to be culturally diverse?

In as much as I have the greatest respect for Madiba, and honour the part he played in bringing about democracy to South Africa, I don’t know if using his image alone on our currency is an altogether good idea.

The Big Five banknote design, as I mentioned earlier, is common to all South Africans, regardless of culture, creed or ethnic origin. It was neutral. It did not point to any single culture.

If the government really does want to change our banknotes, let them do so by re-designing the images of the Big Five and by introducing newer, better anti-counterfeiting features.

But the whole idea of changing the design of our banknotes is symptomatic of another problem that exists within South African Government – the tendency to fix things that are not broken, instead of concentrating on questions of substance, such as Crime, Education, Housing and Economic Infrastructure.

But I digress, and should rather put an end to this blog post, and leave that particular topic for another time.

What is the problem with Steam?

Ok, to start off, a good friend of mine is a Dungeon Siege fan, and he went off an purchased a original copy of Dungeon Siege III on DVD. Now as most of you are aware, Dungeon Siege III is available also from Steam, and you must have a Steam account to play.

Now my friend is not fortunate enough to have an ADSL connection right now, and must rely on a 3G connection over his cell phone, and he asked me if he could connect to my ADSL for the installation and registration of DS3.

I accepted, because he is a good friend, and friends help each other out.

This is why Unemployment in South Africa is so high!

For most of my professional career, I’ve been freelancing as a computer specialist, and have always striven to provide a level of service that results in pride in a job well done and a good reputation. Calling myself freelance is only a polite way of saying that I’m presently unemployed, and I’m trying to scratch out a living.

I heard just last-night on the news that our esteemed minister of finance, whose name I do not recall, will be executing a 10-year-plan in which he intends to create 5-million new jobs. Never mind that over those same 10 years, another 2.5 million new matrics will be entering the job market.

But from personal experience, it doesn’t really matter what anyone does to improve the unemployment rate, because I know why the figures are so damned dismal!

This is the stupidity I have to deal with

I keep waiting for something else to go wrong this month.

First, my dad is hospitalized for an operation to resolve a life-threatening "cancer" on is back, and on the same day he was admitted, we had a vicious electrical storm that fried just about all the appliances in my house, including my computer.

Now this is what I call product support!

It’s absolutely remarkable how efficient the technical support team at some companies are.

If anyone here is familiar with the Canon Pixma series of printers, then you would know first hand that this range of printers is natively supported in Vista. By this I mean all you need do is plug it in, and a few seconds later, Vista uses it’s own certified driver, and you can print.

Skinning and Customizing the Windows User Interface

The problem with skins for your OS is not that they are used, but that they are used by people who don’t know any better.

I remember the scary days of Windows 98 where just about everyone customized the UI, and in far too many cases, to a point where the system was unusable by anyone other than the owner of the computer! It’s was a nightmare diagnosing a system like that, and next to impossible to have a productive tech-support phone call trying to explain how to get to Network Neighborhood by explaining which icon to look for after the f* user changed it to a bumble bee or some other totally unrelated rubbish.

Windows Vista – One Year On

I’ve been meaning to write some sort of review concerning Vista x64, and my experiences over the past year. But I’m not a writer, and never will be. Heck, I’ve even been accused of being able to write many pages without saying anything at all!

An acquaintance of mine on a Vista Newsgroup has written his own review though, and it basically echo’s my own sentiments. Read it here: Windows Vista Year in Review

Love Is…

st_valentine_55What is Love, really?

The single most important aspect of our lives is ironically the one thing that cannot be fully explained. Some will say that love is a desire not to be alone. Others say it’s instinct from eons ago. Some even dismiss it as nothing more than the means with which to get what they want.
